New App: Docs

I wrote a new app today called “Docs”. This is a front end for locally stored documents on the iPhone so that you can read them easily. This is similar to “Wild Eyes” app except it’s better because with Wild Eyes, you must install a local web server such as apache or lightftpd. These drain battery and take resources.
This app uses the safari file:// patch. So it will be required that you install that patch before the app (both are in installer – Cydia users will find the 1.1.3/4 patch installs automatically for them).
To use the app, just copy your documents to your iPhone in a folder such as /var/mobile/Media/Documents. The folder to use is up to you. Load the app and navigate to this folder then tap “save default” to make this the default folder that will load each time the app loads. After this, the app will always load in this location. Select the doc and you will be taken right to safari with the doc loading.
This is better than the PDF reader because you get to use Safari’s awesome zoom, pinch, and landscape features. You can also install bookmarklets for an in page search. This is better than using the file:// patch alone with Safari bookmarks because you can add a lot of documents and not have to ever type the documents to create the initial bookmark.
